Since the late 19th century, when the first hiking trail, Platteklip Gorge, was established, Table Mountain has been a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, which opened in 1929, also made the mountain more accessible to tourists, though hiking remained a popular way to reach the top.
Table Mountain is one of Cape Town's most iconic landmarks, offering a range of hiking routes that provide stunning views and the chance to experience nature up close.
As exhilarating as it is, hiking the mountain comes with certain risks. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a first-timer, following these safety tips is essential to ensure a safe and enjoyable hike.
Be prepared for changing weather
While it’s summer, the weather on Table Mountain can change unexpectedly, going from sunny and warm at the bottom to cold and wet at the top.
Selma Hercules, Executive Director of the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company, emphasises that "conditions can change faster than you think."
To stay comfortable, dress in layers that you can easily add or remove depending on the weather. A light jacket, sunscreen, and a hat are essentials to bring with you.
Stay aware of your surroundings
When hiking, it’s important to stay alert to both your surroundings and the people around you. Even though Table Mountain is a popular spot, it’s still important to hike in a group, stick together, and stay vigilant.
If you spot anything suspicious, don’t hesitate to report it. The safety of all hikers is a priority, and it’s crucial to be cautious, especially in less crowded areas.
Know how to handle snakes
Table Mountain is home to around 22 species of snakes, though only a few are venomous. Most snakes will avoid humans, but it's important to stay calm and avoid provoking them.
If you encounter a snake, "move slowly away and show that you hold no threat," says Hercules.
Stay on marked trails and avoid venturing off-path to minimise the chances of an encounter.
Never hike alone
One of the most important hiking tips is to always go with a group. If you're hiking alone, make sure to tell someone your planned route and estimated return time.
If you can’t find anyone to hike with, consider joining a guided tour for added safety.
Pack smart
Make sure your backpack contains essentials for a day on the mountain: plenty of drinking water, snacks, a fully charged cell phone, and an emergency contact list.

While hiking, avoid carrying valuables like expensive jewellery or visible electronics. Keep your phone out of sight and leave any valuable items at home or in your accommodation.

If you're using the Cableway or visiting the top station, always stay on the marked pathways and follow the safety signs. Listening to the Cable Car operator’s safety instructions is crucial for your well-being.
Support safety efforts
Hercules also highlights the importance of supporting organizations like Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS) and Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR).
These teams play a vital role in ensuring the safety of both the mountain and its visitors, especially during fire season.
