Cabo Beach Club at the V&A Waterfront will play host to the Fight Island boxing event on Saturday, October 19.
Promoter Matt Leisching said the premium, full-scale experience will showcase some of the finest boxing talent in the city.
With Emile Brits sidelined due to injury, Cristiano Ndombassy is set to face Darrin Rossouw in an exciting eight-round middleweight battle.
With 13 wins; 10 coming via KO, and nine losses, Ndombassy will be in search of a win against Rossouw.
Both fighters once trained together under the Brice Boxing Academy a few years ago.
“It’s an amazing opportunity for me. It’s an amazing opportunity for Cape Town boxing. Fight Island is definitely something different and something that can go big. People are very outgoing and love combat sport in Cape Town,” said the Gqeberha-born Rossouw.
After both experiencing setbacks in recent months, their upcoming bout is expected to be anything but soft. With their aggressive styles, this friendly rivalry is set to deliver an exciting match-up.
“I am going to fight at middleweight at this fight. I am looking good. I am not taking it lightly at all. When Emile fractured his hand, Ndombassy stepped up. I’ve trained with him before. I know what to expect. He is a tough, rugged fighter. I know what to do. I have all that it takes to beat him,” said Rossouw.
In the super-middleweight division, undefeated Dylan Prosser (4-0), will take on Sifiso Chili (1-1), showcasing one of Cape Town’s promising prospects in the anticipated showdown.
The card also features Western Cape Super Bantamweight Champion Khaya Mlata, squaring off against southpaw, Siboniso Gonya, in a technically skilled match-up, pitting a rising star against a former world title contender.
Fighting out of Blood, Sweat & Tears in Green Point, the orthodox boxer, Mlata is undefeated in five matches; with three of his victories coming via TKO.
The former WBO Inter-Continental Bantamweight champion, Gonya has a record of 13 wins; five coming via TKO, and five losses.
Fighting out of the UFC Middleweight Champion Dricus Du Plessis’s CIT Gym in Pretoria, undefeated prospect, SD Pypers will be up against Sipho Manya (0-1) in the middleweight.
Local rivalry heats up with Dwayne Dodzo facing Dillon Solomons in the middleweight.
The Ring’s Dodzo goes into the fight with a record of four wins in four fights, which includes a win in a brawl against Jimmy Mabundji in Salt River Blackpool in June.
Pride Fighting Academy’s Solomons’ on the other hand – with six wins; three coming via TKO and two losses, goes into the fight with a win against Cedric Nsendula in Ottery, also in June.
Golden Gloves Boxing Club’s Beavan Sibanda (7-0) will clash against Bloemfontein’s Tsepo Mokhele (1-2), adding another layer of excitement in the mini flyweight division on the evening.
Leisching announced that the weigh-in will take place at the Pepper Club at 1pm on Friday, October 18.
Fight Island takes place at Cabo Beach Club on Saturday October 19, with amateur boxers starting at 3.30pm and professional boxers starting at 7pm. There will also be live music and food on sale.
