Hope Street in Gardens was the place to be for boxing enthusiasts last Friday.
The event was organised by Maxim promotions and headlined by a middleweight bout between Christian Bobo and Johannes Salie.
Bobo emerged victorious by points decision after six rounds for his second win in three fights. For Salie it was his 11th loss in his 26 fight career.
In the supporting bout, Yamkela Platjie lost on points decision against Sithembiso Maduna in their featherweight clash.
There was also nothing separating Siphamandla Maliti and Gcina Makhoba who fought in the catchweight as they drew their four rounder. Maliti used the width of the ring and his jab to set up his straight left punch.
However, his opponent, showed exactly why it would be no walk in the park as he caught Maliti with a couple of nasty blows that would have sent another fighter down to the canvas.
While Maliti remains unbeaten, this was Makhoba’s first draw from four wins and one loss in his professional career.
In other undercard results, Sisonke Boxing Club’s trio, Xolisa Matane, Sandiso Centane and Fezeko Maginindane, were outperformed by their opponents.
Maginindane lost via points decision to Mbulelo Gubula after four rounds in a mini-flyweight bout.
Centane lost via points to Mouton Vianco after four rounds of an entertaining flyweight bout.
Zumbonge Nocele was too strong for Matane following his first round KO win.
The surprise of the night came during a four-round heavyweight bout between Hout Bay’s Sandiso Kota and the DRC’s Patrick Mampuya Sindani.
Sindani started off well, knocking down Kota in the opening round. Kota adjusted well and came back with a knock down of his own to beat Sindani via a knockout decision in the second round.
Frank Masden, from Green Point, took his winning tally to four after he beat Tanzania’s Saidi Habibu after four rounds of a middleweight battle.
