Is it possible for Sibusiso Madikizela to once again cross the finish line in first place at this year’s Red Hill Marathon, a feat that would see him claim a fourth consecutive title?
This question will be answered on Saturday, January 24, when one of the standout events on the Western Cape road-running calendar gets underway.
Hosted by Fish Hoek Athletics Club, the Red Hill Marathon has a unique twist that sets it apart from other races.
While it is a full 42.2km marathon, it also features a 36km option. During the race, marathon runners have the choice to bypass a 6km loop and transfer to the shorter distance should they feel the need, adding an interesting tactical element to the event.
Madikizela has been the man to beat at Red Hill over the past three years, consistently mastering the tough and scenic route. The timing of the race also adds intrigue, as it traditionally comes on the heels of the Bay to Bay 30km, often serving as a test of endurance and recovery for elite runners.
In his victory last year, Madikizela arrived at Red Hill full of confidence after finishing second at the Bay to Bay race the previous weekend. This time around, the build-up has been slightly different. He heads into the marathon having missed out on a Bay to Bay podium finish, crossing the line in fifth place.
