It’s been a testing season for Union-Milnerton in the Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU), but the weekend win against reigning champs, Hamilton, can be classified as the sweetest moment so far. The last-gasp win saw the Theo Marais outfit running out victors with a 40–36 score line against a tough side that had only lost for the second time in their 10 games.
The win keeps Uni-Mil in sixth place on the log after their 12 games. And the weekend win was their fifth, and it could not be a bigger one as it keeps them in contention for play-off spot. With the league dwindling down, the results could not be any more important and there’s no time for slip-ups if any side wants to lock up their play-off berth.
The victory came despite Uni-Mil scoring fewer tries, four to Hamilton’s six, but it was their kicking and calm heads under pressure that saw them home. The accurate boot of Alroy Brandt clinched the deal for his side, as the flyhalf slotted four penalties and converted all four tries.
Uni-Mil aims to carry their winning momentum into the weekend as they face Tygerberg away, another crucial fixture to remain in contention. Both teams share the same number of wins, though Tygerberg has played two fewer matches.
