It came as no surprise this past weekend when Cape Town Roses mentor Xolile Madikane once again lifted the coach-of-the-tournament award, making it an incredible four consecutive Engen Knockout Challenge trophies for his young squad.

In local football circles, it's widely accepted that Madikane is not just a student of the game but a profound and dedicated mentor of female footballers, especially within the Cape Town metropole.

Madikane's dedication isn't merely theoretical, but it's noticeable, reflected in the blossoming careers of numerous national team players who have flourished under his guidance.

The Cesane twins, Noxolo and Sinoxolo, are a prime example of their talent honed and nurtured by Madikane's judgement and commitment.

It's a familiar cycle as the current crop of promising young women in his squad could soon move on to bigger and better opportunities, a common trajectory for players from teams with fewer resources.

This is not the progression that fazes the mentor. For Madikane, his role is about ensuring his players maximise their potential and carve out meaningful football careers.

"It's a passion. I'm a primary school teacher. When I became a teacher, I wanted to make a difference in my community and I will do that until I'm no longer fit to," said Madikane.

This belief clearly extends from the classroom to the pitch. A teacher at Lwazi Primary School in Gugulethu, Madikane views the football field as an extension of his educational mission where children, particularly young girls, can develop essential life skills.

"It's all about building my community and having a platform where children can play sports," he said.

His work ethic is worthy of notice, yet Madikane remains humble, always deflecting praise to his players.

"These kids sacrifice a lot. They never disappoint, never late, and never absent," he said.

His leadership has now paved the way for his team to compete at the national Knockout Challenge, where the stakes are even higher as they will face off against top-tier sides from across the country.
