In 2023, Hout Bay United Football community (HBUFC) partnered with Fleetwood Town FC of England to establish a football academy in Hout Bay as part of the Fleetwood international academy programme.
Since then, the academy, Fleetwood Town International Football Academy (FTIFA), has welcomed over 70 players from South Africa and neighbouring countries.
The FTIFA also has a high school programme that follows the Cambridge High school curriculum.
The high school has grown significantly, and in 2025 it offers both the IEB and Pearson IGCSE syllabuses.
New academic director Dan Landi brings a wealth of experience from his time as founder and principal of the Bay Academy.
Students split their days between online schooling with face-to-face tutoring and support, and training for their football careers.
“The boys don't only train on the field, they also have weekly mental performance sessions, agility training, a reaction wall for visual development, and video and match analysis,” said academy director Michael Darby.
As footballers, the students have pathways into Fleetwood Town's clubs in Ireland and England, as well as local clubs.
Already the high school has players in the ABC Motsepe league and some who have signed professional contracts.
“In June this year, 20 players will head to the Liverpool Academy in Mauritius for their annual tour, following a successful tour to Plett in 2024,” said Darby.
