KIMBERLEY has done it again!
This time, the city’s Diamond Archery Club has proven once again that dedication and teamwork can lead to extraordinary results.
At the African Bowhunters Association (ABO) National Championships 2024, held at the scenic Gabbata Lodge near Roodeplaat Dam outside Pretoria, the Kimberley-based team made their mark in what can only be described as spectacular fashion.
The competition was fierce, with 486 archers from across South Africa battling it out over two gruelling days. Each participant faced two challenging courses, all while contending with hot, humid conditions that tested their endurance and focus.
But the 20 archers representing the Diamond Archery Club were not to be discouraged and in a proud moment for the club, three members were crowned National Champions.
Odette Victor claimed gold in the Female Hunter Class Aided category, Riaan Moller triumphed in the Hunters Class, and club chairman John Filmalter secured gold in the Senior Masters Class Aided category. In total, the team brought home 10 podium finishes, including several second- and third-place medals.
Speaking about the club’s success, Filmalter couldn’t hide his excitement.
“As chairman of the Diamond Archery Club, I am pleased to announce the remarkable achievements of our team. Winning three national titles and 10 podium places is an incredible accomplishment, but what makes me even more proud is how our archers competed with determination and sportsmanship.”
And the accolades didn’t stop there. The Diamond Archery Club was also named ABO’s “Club of the Year," a prestigious recognition of their excellence and commitment to the sport.
For Filmalter, this honour reflects the heart of the club: the hard work of its members, the dedication of its coaching staff, and the unwavering support from families and sponsors.
“We couldn’t achieve this success without the support of our community. From the encouragement of our families to the involvement of our sponsors, these factors are vital for the growth and success of archery.
“Events like these not only showcase our talent but also bring people together in a spirit of camaraderie.”
The championships were a celebration of skill, passion, and community, showcasing the talent that lies in Kimberley and beyond. And even as the team looks to the future, Filmalter extended an invitation to anyone eager to start from the bottom and take up the sport.
“We’re always excited to welcome new members to the Diamond Archery Club,” he said. “Joining us isn’t just about learning archery; it’s about being part of a story of success, teamwork, and shared passion. We look forward to creating even more memorable moments in the years to come.”
With their impressive performance at the Nationals and the coveted “Club of the Year” title, the Diamond Archery Club is setting a gold standard for archery in South Africa.
Their journey continues, and the next chapter promises to be just as, if not more, inspiring.
