Tense relegation battle in WPCA Premier Division

Buntu Gotywa|Published 1 year ago

Lukanyo Metu made 88 runs in his side’s innings but they still fell short of Kraaifontein’s total of 245.

Milnerton Cricket Club find themselves teetering on the brink of relegation from the Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) Premier Division.

Enduring a dismal run of form, Milnerton suffered their 13th consecutive defeat at the weekend.

Only a solitary point separates them from the relegation zone.

With just four games remaining in the season, the club must re-enact the same winning form that saw them secure four consecutive victories between October and November of 2023.

In their recent fixture against Kraaifontein, Lukanyo Metu bravely attempted to guide his team to safety.

Metu led with a gritty innings, top-scoring with 88 runs in pursuit of Kraaifontein's total of 245.

Despite his efforts, Milnerton was bowled in the 49th over, falling short by 23 runs and succumbing to yet another defeat.

This loss not only extended their losing streak but also worsened their plight as relegation loomed closer.

Meanwhile, rival relegation candidate Rygate closed the gap with a crucial victory over Primrose, intensifying the pressure on Milnerton.

At the weekend, facing a dire situation at 45/4, Metu found support from Justin du Toit as they sought to resurrect Milnerton's innings.

The duo stitched together a resilient partnership of 87 runs for the fifth wicket before Du Toit left the crease for 37.

Undeterred, Metu forged another promising alliance with Malcom Cloete, adding 72 runs to the total.

However, Cloete's dismissal for 32 signaled the beginning of the end for Milnerton, ultimately leading to their downfall.

With just four games left to salvage their season, Milnerton faces formidable opponents in Rondebosch and Durbanville, along with fixtures against UWC and Bellville.

The remaining matches will be crucial in determining their fate, as they battle to avoid relegation alongside Rylands, who sit at the foot of the table.

Rylands' recent victory over Primrose in the bottom-of-the-table clash has kept their hopes alive, while Milnerton, Primrose, and Rylands remain embroiled in a tense relegation battle.
