SA Under-19s will fancy their chances against hosts, while WP’s struggles continue

PLAY started late, on Saturday, day 2 of the match between Western Province and eta Northerns in their Group C, Pool D clash of the Senior Provincial Men’s tournament at the Kimberley Oval after the outfield had been drenched by Thursday’s heavy rain.

Northerns won the toss and elected to field first. Due to the late start only 70 were eventually bowled

Western Province got off to a very poor start and were bowled out for 110 in 38.3 overs, with their top batsmen André Malan and Brandon Louw (23 each) and Lehan Botha (22 not out). The best of the eta Northerns bowlers was Gionne Koopman who captured 6/23 runs in 12 overs.

In reply, Northerns were on 48/3 after 16.1 overs at the close of play, trailing by 62 runs, Diego Rosier not out on 20 and Rubin Hermann not out 11. The pick of the Province bowlers was Ryan Klein with 2/19.

Meanwhile, at the Country Club B field where SA Under-19 won the toss and batted first against NCC, the SA team reached 330 all out in their first innings. The main batsmen who made an impression were Jan Hendrik Coetzee 75, Michael Copeland 68 and Jordan Hermann 47, while the pick of the Northern Cape Cricket’s bowlers were Benjamin van Rensburg 2/37, Jerome Xaba 3/51 and Ernest Kemm 2/57.

Northern Cape Cricket in their innings were on 199/6 after 73 overs at the end of the second day, trailing by 131 runs. Ernest Kemm scored 42, Garnet Tarr 21 and Blake Schraader not out on 53, while for SA Under-19 the pick of the bowlers were Andile Simelane 2/14 and Celeb Seleka 2/76.

Both matches conclude on Sunday.
