There are big shoes to fill for Primrose after five winless games in the Western Province Cricket Association’s Premier League one-day campaign.

The side from Rosmead will be in search of their first win in the one-day campaign this weekend when they battle it out against Rylands, in Athlone.

Administrator at Primrose, Fouzia Sylvester, said the AMA20 win over Kraaifontein this past Sunday should be a booster for Primrose going into the 50 over derby against Rylands on Saturday.

Primrose moved to the bottom of the log after a seven wicket defeat to Green Point Cricket Club, at home, last Saturday.

Green Point won the toss and elected to bowl, with Primrose setting a score of 197 all-out in 44.3 overs.

Primrose’s Qaasim Salie and Justin Pringle, each scored 33 runs to edge their team closer to the 200 mark.

It was, however, not enough as Green Point’s bowlers had other plans. All-rounder Wesley Bedja took 2/22 runs, while Guy Sheena got bowling figures of 2/33 runs.

Green Point’s coach, Steven Westraad said it was a fairly new wicket, in terms of this season, it has not been used much, hence they chose to bowl first.

Westraad said the bowlers came through on the day, however, the their fielding needs sharpening.

Green Point’s opening batsmen, Daniel Biggs (62 runs) and Patrick van Niekerk (59 runs) each scored a half-century to help their team reach 199/3 in 26.2 overs.

Coach Westraad said Biggs and Van Niekerk have instilled a lot of confidence in their batting line-up. He is hoping the lads will continue the winning streak one game at a time.

“There was a incredibly disciplined approach in the way Biggs batted — he stuck to the basics, keeping it simple. It was almost like a baseball approach on how he hits the ball. He played high percentage cricket,” said Westraad.

Fifth-placed Green Point will host sixth-placed Cape Town Cricket Club in Green Point on Saturday. They will be without all-rounder, Bedja, as he is called up to the Colts. But, captain Gareth Roderick will make a return after an illness he had this past weekend.

Westraad also said they are proud of Green Point for effectively reaching the quarter-finals of the provincial AMA20 tournament this past Sunday despite the loss to Bellville on the last ball of the game.

"Green Point shot the lights out of the 12 teams in the T20. We had a shaky start and a couple of missed catches against Bellville. We should build momentum from Saturday’s win heading into Christmas," said Westraad.
