The City of Cape Town has temporarily closed the Sea Point swimming pool from today, Tuesday September 17, to allow for necessary excavation and repairs to a collapsed water line.
The City said during this time the property was declared hazardous for public use and health and safety safeguards such as signage and fencing of prohibited areas were put in place.
“Sea Point swimming pool is one of our most popular facilities, open all year long. During a routine inspection of the facility, a sinkhole was detected. The sinkhole was created by a collapsed water line. For a proper assessment of the damage and to determine the exact scope of work required for repairs, the entire water line must be unearthed. At this stage, the pool has to be closed due to this critical work. We apologise to the facility users for any inconvenience caused, and will work as speedily as possible to ensure that this amenity is up and running soon,” said mayoral committee member for community services and health, councillor Patricia Van der Ross.
Ms Van der Ross said there was no reopening date as the extent of the defects can only be identified once excavation has been completed.
“The projected timeline estimated on the assumption of works is approximately two months,” she said.
Bathers are encouraged to use the Long Street indoor swimming pool while Sea Point is closed.
Long Street’s operating hours are Monday to Sunday and public holidays, from 7am to 7pm.
Long Street Indoor Swimming Pool is reserved for use by women only every Tuesday from 10am to 2pm, or 10am to 1pm during school holidays. If a public holiday falls on a Tuesday, full public use will be permitted that day.
