Public toilets at municipal parks in Bo-Kaap, Oranjezicht and Tamboerskloof have been refurbished at a cost of R2 million.
“I am really excited about the completion of the City’s project to refurbish and reopen the ablution facilities at De Waal Park, Burnside Park and Bryant Street Park in Ward 77. This is a project that I initiated with recreation and parks when I started as a ward councillor and I’m positive that the reopened ablutions will benefit the surrounding community and visitors to the area,” said ward councillor Francine Higham.
An attendant, hired from the expanded public works programme, would be on duty at each of the facilities during opening hours to keep them clean and safe, she said.
The facilities, she said, would “provide dignified services to those who are homeless or rough sleeping in the area, as well as those visiting and working in the area, such as tourists, taxi operators and even scooter delivery drivers. Bryant Street Park is also used by the learners from neighbouring schools”.
She urged the public to help the City protect the facilities from vandalism.
Among other things, the work included repairs to flushing units and pipes, painting and the replacement of taps, urinals, toilets, basins, doors, windows, gutters and roofing.
Erefaan Ramjam, of Bo-Kaap, welcomed the repairs to the Bryant Street Park toilets.
“It looks nice, I’m happy with what I see. I’m glad that they chose to upgrade it and not destroy it. This park can be used for the kids to play and for adults to come for a walk as well. I see a garden happening here, I see us doing a night market here in the summer. This is a living space and the residents must be proud of this living space.”
The public can report vandalism and theft by calling 107 from a landline or 021 480 7700 from a cellphone, or email rp.enquiries@capetown.gov.za
The public toilets will be open on weekdays from 8am to 6pm from mid July.
