Camps Bay High School was graced with the presence of one of its former pupils, now a well-known actress, singer and presenter, at the school’s prefect assembly.
Noluthando Meje, known as Nolly Nollz, who matriculated from the school in 2005, rose to stardom after becoming a finalist on season 2 of Idols South Africa in 2003.
Speaking at the assembly on Friday August 17, Noluthando said one thing that could not be taken away from Camps Bay High School was its spirit of unity.
She said although she had always been passionate about acting, it was at Camps Bay High that her talent had been developed and where she learnt to be confident with her craft.
“During my time at the school, I entered Idols SA, and the teachers and the entire school were supportive, and I could feel the spirit of togetherness,” she said.
Noluthando visited her alma mater, which prides itself on its rich cultural diversity, good academic performance and a variety of sports activities, to promote the local movie Farewell Ella Bella, e in which she plays the role of Khanyi. She has also starred in Swartwater (2014), Silent Witness (1996) and soapie Isidingo.
Noluthando said playing the role of Khanyi is different from her previous roles, such as that of Zukisa on Isidingo.
“Khanyi is this young, vibrant, colourful, loud and crazy woman who is not afraid to speak her mind, and I really enjoyed playing this role,” she said.
The movie, which is currently on circuit, features acclaimed actor Sello Maake ka-Ncube, as well as Katlego Danke and Jay Anstey.
“I’ve worked with most of the cast members before, and even the ones I didn’t know, we got to know each other and really enjoyed shooting this movie,” Noluthando said.
Teacher Kevin Jenneke, who taught Noluthando from Grade 8, said she had always been an enthusiastic pupil from the start and enjoyed drama and music.
“She had stayed in Rugby, Milnerton and struggled with public transport, but she’d always avail herself for practice after school. The school is really proud of her and what she’s accomplished so far; she’s an absolute star,” he said.
