Bo-Kaap fire above Voetboog Street extinguished

Firefighters battled a blaze near Signal Hill late on Sunday, January 19. The fire was extinguished in the early hours with no damage or injuries reported.

A late-night fire that broke out on Signal Hill in the vicinity of Bo-Kaap on Sunday, January 18, has been successfully extinguished, with no property damage or injuries reported.

The City's Fire and Rescue Services spokesman, Jermaine Carelse, said reports of the blaze near Signal Hill were received at about 9.30pm.

Due to the fire's intensity, a large operation involving more than 60 firefighters was launched, supported by Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) and Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS) crews.

Bo-Kaap neighbourhood watch chairman and vice-chairman of Bo-Kaap Civic and Ratepayers Association, Ebrahim Christian, said while at the scene, he feared of the fire would the houses in Ella Street.

He said the fire broke at out above Voetboog Street at 9.20pm. 

"With strong winds it spread quickly up to Military Road, and spreading towards the Noon Gun, and further up towards Signal Hill," he said. 

Mr  Christian said that the fire was contained at about 10.45pm.

"Thanks to excellent work from the fire department," he said. 

A fire at the foot of Signal Hill, bordering Bo-Kaap, was extinquished early on Monday, January 19.

"Firefighting teams worked hard to protect properties along Voetboog Street as the fire moved in that direction," said Mr Carelse.

The fire was brought under control and extinguished by around 1am on Monday, January 19.

Crews conducted periodic inspections until 4.30am to ensure there were no flare-ups.

Signal Hill Road was temporarily closed during the incident.

"The cause of the fire remains unknown at this stage," said Mr Carelse.
