NSRI saves paddle boarders caught in strong winds off Bakoven

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has commended onlookers for raising the alarm after two stand-up paddle boarders were swept out to sea in strong winds offshore of Bakoven on Saturday, December 6 at 12.53pm.

They appeared to be in difficulty, and the NSRI Table Bay rescue craft Spirit of Day was sent out.

According to NSRI Table Bay coxswain Roxy Taylor, while responding to the scene, multiple calls were received from concerned eyewitnesses. 

NSRI Table Bay, NSRI Bakoven, and the City of Cape Town water rescue network were activated.

On arrival at the scene, a local couple, a man and a woman, were found a nautical mile offshore of Bakoven, caught in the 25 to 30 knot South Easterly winds.

They were both taken on board the rescue craft, and their paddleboard was recovered.

They were not injured and were dropped off at Camps Bay Beach, where no further assistance was required.
