Rangers foil robbery and apprehend car break-in suspect

A Malawian man appeared in Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, September 23, for possession of a dangerous weapon.
The Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) sea, air, and mountain (SEAM) team members foiled a robbery on Pat's Track hiking trail, in the vicinity of Signal Hill, on Saturday, September 20.
The man was apprehended during a routine operation.
Western Cape police spokesman Sergeant Wesley Twigg said the man was remanded in custody and would appear in court on Monday, September 29.
SANParks spokesperson JP Louw said that when they approached the man, he attempted to flee and was seen discarding evidence into nearby bushes.
"Rangers acted swiftly, preventing him from escaping. A search of the surrounding area was conducted," he said.
The man was arrested and handed over to the relevant authorities for further investigation.
Mr Louw said that the park continued to prioritise proactive patrols, a visible presence on trails, and rapid response measures to safeguard all who use the area.

Mr Louw said dedicated ranger teams were actively working to maintain safety and security across Table Mountain
"Safety of visitors remains the park’s top priority," said Mr Louw.
Suspect apprehended during car break-in near Lion's Head
The TMNP SEAM special operations team successfully apprehended a suspect following a vehicle break-in along the Lion’s Head parking area on Saturday, September 20.
While conducting a routine patrol in the vicinity, SEAM rangers witnessed a car break-in in progress.
Mr Louw said that upon noticing the rangers, the suspect attempted to flee on foot.
"A swift response was initiated, and a K9 was deployed. The K9 engaged in pursuit and successfully apprehended the suspect a short distance from the scene," he said.
Law enforcement was immediately notified, and the suspect was handed over to the police for further investigation.
"SANParks reminds all visitors to remain vigilant and avoid leaving valuables in parked vehicles. Enhanced patrols will continue in hotspot areas to ensure the safety of park users," said Mr Louw.
