The body of a 29-year-old man, suspected of drowning, was recovered at Sunset Beach, Sea Point, on Thursday, September 18, according to police.

This is the third body discovered along the Sea Point beachfront in less than a month.

According to provincial police spokesman Captain FC Van Wyk, Sea Point police received a complaint of a possible drowning shortly after 9am.

He said officers, assisted by Law Enforcement, responded to the scene, where they discovered the body.

"The Western Cape Provincial Water Policing and Diving Services were called in to retrieve it."

While it is suspected that the man drowned, police confirmed that a post-mortem would be conducted to establish the exact cause of death.

Ward 54 councillor Nicola Jowell said: “At this point, it is believed that he most likely drowned, but that would still need to be confirmed. It is very sad to have yet another incident like this on the beaches in our part of the city. My condolences to his family and friends in their time of need.”

Thursday’s discovery follows two other fatalities in the Sea Point area in recent weeks. On Sunday, August 31, the body of an unidentified man was found along Broken Bath Beach, also suspected to be a drowning.

A week earlier, on Sunday, August 24, a man in his 40s was discovered dead along the promenade with a gunshot wound. Police suspect he took his own life and registered an inquest for investigation.

Police investigations into all three incidents are ongoing, said Captain Van Wyk.
