A 48-year-old man is expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court next week, after he was arrested for drug possession during a routine police patrol in Mouille Point.
According to Sea Point police spokesperson Captain Cyril Dicks, officers were conducting crime prevention patrols along Beach Road at around 1am on Saturday, September 6, when they noticed suspicious activity inside a white Toyota Corolla parked in the newly renovated parking area facing the ocean.
He said police searched the vehicle and uncovered a tablet, identified as Viagra, on the passenger side.
“Officers then conducted a further search and discovered a plastic ice-cream tub containing mandrax tablets hidden under a seat,” he said.
The driver was arrested and taken to the Sea Point police station, where an additional four tablets were found concealed on him. In total, 154 tablets were confiscated.
Sea Point acting Station Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Engelbrecht, commended the officers for their vigilance and the successful arrest.
Mouille Point Ratepayers Association co-ordinator Jane Meyer said their private security company was aware of the incident.
“Well done to the police for effecting the arrest.”
Ms Meyer said the City was supposed to fix the old floodlights and install access control during the revamp of the Granger Bay parking area.
"The arrangement is that our private security provider will open and close this parking area daily. Unfortunately, the floodlights are still not operational, and the access control bollards are yet to be installed. With the lights working and the parking area locked to vehicles at night, there would be little to no anti-social behaviour taking place, said Ms Meyer
