The Penis Dialogues, a multi-genre theatrical piece focusing on the devastating impact of toxic masculinity on the vulnerable and marginalised sectors of society, will have its launch event on Sunday, August 24.
The Penis Dialogues has been conceptualised, written, produced, and directed by Clive Barrows, a former Harold Cressy teacher in English, Latin, and drama. Mr Barrows, originally from Crawford, said: “We have become a passive and complacent society of observers and voyeurs. A culture of patriarchy is ingrained in our country, which perpetuates harmful gender stereotypes in our society.”
Mr Barrows said this production aims to contribute to the broader conversation, raise awareness, promote empathy and understanding, encourage change and accountability, and amplify the voices of marginalized and vulnerable sectors.
At the launch event, there will be a panel discussion by speakers including actress Denise Newman; gynaecologist, obstetrician and author, Dr Chantal Stewart; Genderworks representative, Laurie Gaum; toxic masculinity specialist, Lesley Thomas; Callas Foundation founder Caroline Peters; MOSAIC representative Tarisai Mchuchu-MacMillan; and Triangle Project representative Carol Lennon.
The production is aiming for a theatre run in November, during the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children, and eventually as a roadshow to schools around the country.
The Penis Dialogues launch event, which will also include music and dance, will take place at the Novalis Ubuntu Institute, Rosmead Avenue, Wynberg, on Sunday, August 24, from 3pm. It is free of charge, seating within the venue is limited, and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. To secure your seat, RSVP by emailing clivebarrowsproductions@gmail.com
