After a 15-year hiatus, the Green Point Flea Market is making its long-awaited return to its original home, marking a momentous comeback since its closure in 2009 for the development of the Cape Town Stadium precinct.

The first day of trading will be this Sunday May 11, operating from 8am to 6pm, and continuing every Sunday thereafter, except on days when major events take place in the stadium and area.

"We are thrilled to finally return to our original home. This market was a heartbeat of informal trade and entrepreneurship in Cape Town," said Rosheda Muller, chairperson of the Green Point Flea Market and national president of the National Informal Traders Alliance of South Africa (NITASA).

"It’s more than just stalls and sales - it’s heritage, identity, and survival for many families.”

She said the relaunch was more than just about a marketplace; it's the revival of a vibrant community, a cultural treasure, and a vital economic hub for around 200 traders, many of whom have deep roots in the market’s original legacy.

In many cases, children of former traders are stepping up to carry forward their family traditions, transforming the reopening into a multigenerational celebration.

Visitors can look forward to a rich tapestry of local offerings, including:

  • Authentic Cape delicacies such as koesisters and samoosas
  • Handcrafted arts and crafts, ceramics, and clothing, all proudly locally made.
  • An atmosphere of community spirit with trading by the market’s oldest vendor, an 80-year-old clothing manufacturer who will be trading from her wheelchair.

“Many of our traders rely on this opportunity to supplement their income and provide for their families,” said Ms Muller. “We call on the Cape Town community - families, weekend park visitors, promenade strollers, and tourists - to show their support and celebrate this homecoming with us.”

Interested traders can contact Rosheda Muller at 081 764 2251 directly for more information on how to participate.
