A 10-YEAR-OLD girl is recovering in hospital after being savagely attacked by a pit bull in Galeshewe earlier this week – an incident that has sparked outrage on social media and prompted a criminal investigation.
Horrific images showing the child’s injuries went viral shortly after the attack, which took place on Tuesday evening in Phutane Street, Galeshewe. The disturbing pictures drew a flood of reactions online, many calling for tougher laws on “dangerous” dog breeds, while others urged social media users to respect the victim’s dignity and privacy.
SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock confirmed on Friday that the Galeshewe police are investigating a case of negligence against the dog’s owner, in terms of legislation that holds individuals accountable when animals cause harm due to carelessness or failure to control them.
According to Kock, children were playing in the street when a pit bull reportedly attacked the 10-year-old girl. She sustained serious wounds to her face and head, requiring emergency medical treatment at a local hospital.
The following day, the SPCA removed the dog from the owner's property as part of their intervention.
Kock noted that under the Animal Matters Amendment Act, anyone found guilty of allowing an animal to cause injury through negligence can face fines or up to two years in prison. Beyond criminal charges, victims and their families may also pursue civil claims to cover trauma, medical bills, and future treatment.
The police have reminded the public that while raising awareness is important, sharing graphic content of injured children is unacceptable.
“The SAPS noted on Friday, with concern, the gruesome photographs of a minor attacked by a pit bull currently circulating on social media platforms,” said Kock. “The SAPS urges members of the public to refrain from posting explicit and gruesome photographs of victims on social media, especially when it involves minors.”
The police are urging witnesses or anyone with more information to come forward and contact the Galeshewe Detectives on 082 495 5420. Tip-offs can also be made anonymously through the SAPS Crime Stop line at 08600 10111 or via the MySAPS app.
The investigation is ongoing.
