The Peter Clarke Art Centre (PCAC) is calling on artists to showcase their work at a fundraising exhibition in May.
The Newlands-based non-profit organisation, which teaches art to underprivileged pupils, will be hosting Exhibition A to raise funds for bursaries that will go to Grade 10 to 12 pupils who wish to follow a creative career path.
PCAC principal, Cindie Ah Ling says bursaries will allow pupils to add art as a seventh or eighth subject and will cover fees, money for materials, and reliable transport such as a school bus to pick up pupils from their schools to come to the art centre and then to return after art classes.
PCAC is also looking to raise funds to maintain their building, which has been their home since 1971. “ We desperately need to overhaul the pupil bathrooms, which are in poor condition. The main building on campus is a national monument, a beautiful space but it requires significant upkeep,” says Ms Ah Ling.
All artists are welcome to take part in Exhibition A and must submit five of their artworks.
“We will have a main exhibition of artworks submitted by artists, and a silent auction of artworks that have been donated to the art centre,” says Ms Ah Ling.
In the main exhibition, artists pay a R100 administrative fee to register their work and if any of their artwork is sold, a 30% commission will go towards PCAC. All proceeds from the silent auction go to PCAC.
Ms Ah Ling says their goal would be to reach around R500 000 from the fundraiser for the bursaries programme, the transportation and upkeep of the building. “ Ultimately, every contribution helps us improve our facilities and support our pupils,” she says.
Artists have until Wednesday April 9 to register in person at their school located at Vredenhof, Keurboom Road, Newlands. Online applications can be sent in until Friday April 11 by visiting their website at https://www.pcac.co.za/latest-news/ or you can email info@pcac.co.za or call 021 683 2720 for more information.
