The community of Lentegeur in Mitchells Plain is taking a stand against gun violence and claiming the area back through a peaceful march that was held on Saturday.

Last week, another viral video circulated online of a group of jongens opening fire in broad daylight at a parkie in Nerine and Sylvia Street.

Residents of Lentegeur took it upon themselves to organise and have their voices heard against the gang violence which has plagued the community.

A video of the march was posted online and shows the group which is led by mostly women and children. Mense in the comments section can be seen asking, ‘waa’ die mans?’

The group can be heard saying ‘Down with the gangsters, down’ while holding placards, as they make their way walking through the streets.

Michael Jacobs, Chairperson for the Lentegeur Community Policing Forum (CPF) said that they are calling on more residents to come forward and take a stand against the current gang violence.

He says: “We as the CPF are calling on the City of Cape Town and asking that the field where the viral video was taken in Nerine Street be fenced on all sides because most of the shootings take place there. The children cannot even play at the park because it is too dangerous.”

“We support the residents who get up and take a stand against crime for the safety of the community. We also call upon the Provincial Commissioner for more patrols and resources for Lentegeur SAPS.”

Anti-crime group, Fight Against Crime South Africa (FACSA) said they salute the residents of the Lentegeur community.

A statement reads: “We want to give a massive shoutout to the incredible people of Lentegeur who took it upon themselves to organise and lead a powerful protest against gang violence in their own community. Your initiative, courage, and unity have shown that when a community stands together, great things happen.”

“You have set a shining example for others to follow, proving that change starts with us. This is what real community power looks like – coming together to make your voices heard and fight for a safer, better tomorrow.”

“FACSA stands with you in this fight, and we know that, together, we can build stronger, safer neighborhoods for everyone.”
