A 37-YEAR-old man who preyed on an unsuspecting teenager has been sentenced to 20 years behind bars.
The Colesberg Regional Court handed down the sentence to Johannes Arends on February 25 following his conviction for rape.
According to Northern Cape police spokesperson Colonel Cherelle Ehlers, the court heard that on August 30, 2024, an 18-year-old teen was visiting friends in Riemvasmaak, Colesberg. At around 9pm, she decided to head home, and Arends offered to walk with her.
But instead of ensuring her safety, he betrayed her trust in the worst possible way. Upon reaching her residence, Arends threatened and raped her before fleeing the scene.
The young woman called for help and a concerned community member assisted her and reported the attack to the police.
The case was taken up by Detective Sergeant Ilse Fan of the De Aar SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit, who led a thorough investigation alongside officers from the Colesberg SAPS. Their efforts paid off when Arends was tracked down and arrested. He remained in custody until his sentencing.
In addition to his 20-year prison term, Arends was also declared unfit to possess a firearm, and his name will be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.
The Northern Cape police have reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to tackling gender-based violence. Colonel Ehlers said that detectives will continue working tirelessly with prosecutors to ensure justice for victims and to hold perpetrators accountable.
