Time to get quacking for Rotary duck race

Racing ducks are available for R100 each, and this year’s winning duck will get R5 000, while the slowest duck will be awarded a R1 000 prize.

Get your ducks in a row and save the date for the Rotary Club Cape of Good Hope’s Duck Grand Prix on Saturday November 9, from 10am to 1pm.

The club’s Bev Frieslich said the event promised to be a fun day out for the whole family.

This year, the event will take place at a new venue in Glencairn: on the river that flows alongside Glen Road between the tennis court and the St Andrew’s Anglican Church.

According to Ms Frieslich, the Grand Prix consists of a series of 100 numbered “racing ducklings” that are sent down the river, and there is a variety of prizes up for grabs.

Entry fees are R20 a person and R100 a duck.

The event concludes with a final race with the winning duck taking home R5 000 while the slowest duck will win R1 000.

Ms Frieslich said the Rotary Club of the Cape of Good Hope introduced duck racing in the far south in 2021, inspired by similar races held by Rotary Clubs in Cape Town, Gauteng, and originally America.

Corporate sponsorships - with company names appearing on the ducks - are also available at R200 each.

All funds raised would be used for community upliftment projects, said Ms Frieslich.
