Hundreds of Mitchell’s Plain residents received their title deeds at Lentegeur civic centre on Saturday June 29.
Four hundred Mitchell’s Plain residents received their title deeds as part of the City of Cape Town’s “Deed-to-door title deed campaign”.
Mayoral committee member for human settlements, Carl Pophaim launched the campaign at Lentegeur civic centre on Saturday June 30.
“We have already found hundreds of beneficiaries through the appointed title deed agents to track down beneficiaries who have never received their title deeds,” he said.
He said often details were not updated, people moved out of the metro, change their contact details and the municipality had been unable to find beneficiaries.
The dedicated team is going door-to-door to find beneficiaries and verify details.
“Title deeds prove ownership and are important documents, including wills and banking loans, among others,” he said.
Mr Pophaim encouraged beneficiaries to update their details at their local housing office.
Avron Plaatjies, councillor for Ward 76, said the initiative was part of an ongoing redress project, aimed at restoring dignity and providing security to residents.
“Title deeds are more than just pieces of paper; they represent legal ownership, stability and the empowerment of our community members.
“By granting these title deeds we are are affirming the rights of our residents, allowing them to fully claim ownership of their homes and invest in the their futures with confidence,” he said.
