No seaboard schools record 100% matric pass rate
The results of the 2023 National Senior Certificate (NSC) matric exams reveal that not one high school on the Atlantic seaboard achieved a 100% pass rate.
Camps Bay High School principal Louis Mostert expressed some satisfaction with the results as they came in with 96.2% after scoring 100% last year.
"Although we missed a perfect pass rate, we recognise the diverse outcomes and note the mixed performances and challenges faced by our learners. This accomplishment underscores the collective commitment to academic excellence at Camps Bay High School. The results reflect not only numerical percentages but, more importantly, the individual strides made by each student towards reaching their personal best,” said Mr Mostert.
Sea Point High School scored 72.4% pass, while the class of 2022 achieved 90%.
Principal Leana Le Breton said they were very disappointed with the results.
“Factors contributing was learner apathy and arrogance. The subjects they performed poorly in are Afrikaans and life sciences where an experienced educator left and learners had to get used to a substitute teacher. We have however already put plans in place for the 2024 matrics and are hopeful that we would be back at the top this year,” said Ms Le Breton.
Vista High School in Bo-Kaap saw a decrease in their pass rate from 72.3% in 2022 to 46.8%, Jan Van Riebeeck High School went from 100% to 95.1%, Herzlia High had a tiny drop from 98.8% to 98.6%, and Good Hope Seminary High School improved to 98.7% pass rate from 93.9%.
Deslee Grobbelaar, the acting principal at Good Hope Seminary, said they are pleased with the academic accomplishments of the class of 2023.
“This outstanding result represents a significant improvement compared to the previous years, with pass rates of 93% in 2022 and 95% in 2021. Notably, 77% of our students achieved Bachelor passes, and many others received diplomas, higher certificates, and a number distinctions, showcasing the depth of excellence within our educational programmes,” said Ms Grobbelaar.
“We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the School Governing Body, parents, WCED and the entire Good Hope school community for their unwavering support. Our dedicated staff members have worked tirelessly to nurture these achievements, and we share in the joy and excitement of this success,” she said.
“This accomplishment not only highlights the academic prowess of our students but also underscores Good Hope Seminary High School's commitment to providing a top-tier educational experience.
Ms Grobbelaar wished the class of 2024 the very best for the upcoming academic year and reminded them of the standard set by the pupils of 2023.
