Early morning fire guts Vredehoek flats

Two flats at Millborough Court in Vredehoek were gutted by an early morning fire.

A fire broke out in the early hours of Wednesday morning at Millborough Court on Upper Mill Street in Vredehoek, destroying two flats.

The City’s Fire and Rescue Service spokesman, Jermaine Carelse, said they had received a call about smoke coming from a flat In Upper Mill Street at 6.40am and that crews from Roeland Street, Salt River, Epping, Sea Point, Epping and Milnerton fire stations had responded.

Two flats were severely damaged while another two suffered considerable fire and water damage.

“Upon arrival it was found that one flat on the fifth floor was alight and the fire was spreading rapidly,” said Mr Carelse.

“By 9.20am firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze which had severely damaged two flats, one on the fifth and the other on the sixth floor. Two similar units were partially damaged, (with) cracks in the walls and ceilings as well as considerable water damage,” he said.

The devastation inside one of the flats gutted by the fire.

He added that no injuries had been reported and that the cause of the fire had not yet been determined.

Flats on the fifth and sixth floors of the building were damaged by the fire.
