Vuyo Spamla, 47, works in Camps Bay and is a mother of one and Sabine Muller, 57, lives in Hout Bay and is a mother of two.
Two Cape Town mothers, are taking on the 13 Peaks challenge to raise funds for the Friends of Child Protection.
Sabine Muller, 57, a physiotherapist, athlete and mother of two from Hout Bay, alongside her running partner, Vuyo Spamla, 47, who is a domestic worker in Hout Bay and Camps Bay with one daughter, will take on the challenge to benefit abused children.
Every second month, the FCP creates comfort packs for children who have been sexually abused and delivers them to various police stations throughout the Western Cape; their most recent project was completed on September 29 at the Gardens Presbyterian church. In July, the Atlantic Sun attended their project (“Friends of Child Protection supply comfort packs to FCS units”, July 14).
Ms Muller and Ms Spamla took on the challenge after a chance meeting with the FCP and hope to raise R100 000 for the organisation by completing a 100km trail run that begins at Signal Hill, continues to Muizenberg Peak, and concludes at Devil's Peak - and what’s more, they aim to do this within 48 hours.
“FCP were having a meeting over a coffee brainstorming the necessity of a fund-raiser for their December pack when I walked past. They realised that they had their answer and I did not hesitate to offer to run 13 Peaks for them as they do amazing work,” said Ms Muller.
Ms Spamla said she is up for the challenge as she loves being out in nature and doing it for the FCP is another motivating factor.
“We have been training for the challenge so we are physically ready, doing it for Friends of Child Protection adds value to this challenge,” she said.
In December, the FCP will assemble 1202 packs that include snacks, underwear, face cloths and soap, a fun activity, a teddy bear to cuddle and other age-appropriate items including nappies and formula for the babies. These comfort packs are distributed as far as George and Worcester in the province.
“It’s amazing what they doing and we hope that it’s a successful campaign. This will go a long way in helping us to prepare comfort packs in December as we will need a high amount of packs during those holidays,” said Antonia Zechner, chairperson of FCP.
By the time this story was published, the two had raised R49 000 in their campaign which can be supported via https://www.backabuddy.co.za/13-peaks-for-fcp or https://pos.snapscan.io/qr/13peaksforfcp
