CITY residents have been advised that water to the city will be cut from Thursday evening until Saturday.
Municipal spokesperson, Sello Matsie, said the water would be cut to the entire city due to emergency repairs that need to be conducted on the 1200mm, 965mm and 600mm pipes in Roodepan and at the Newton Reservoir.
“In order to carry out the necessary repairs, water supply will be suspended from Thursday (October 22) at 6pm in order to empty certain sections and decrease pressure in the pipes.”
Matsie added that the actual work will commence on Friday morning and is expected to last until Saturday afternoon.
“We request the community to ensure that they have adequate water for use during this period.”
Matsie said on Wednesday that the dam levels at the Newton Reservoir were dropping due to the leaks.
“There are various reasons for the leaks. One of these is the stray electrical current caused by passing railway trains over the pipes which can be resolved by utilising the cathodic protection method, while another reason is vandals who destroy valves in the area.”
Matsie stated that a number of jojo tanks would be provided throughout the city.
“Regular updates on the progress will be provided to residents.”
The municipality apologised to residents for the inconvenience.
Meanwhile the SA Weather Office has warned that sizzling temperatures are expected for the weekend. On Friday, the maximum is expected to reach 38 degrees C, which is expected to rise to 39 degrees C on Saturday. The maximum expected for Sunday is 38 degrees C.
