Public hearings on land expropriation to be held in NC

PUBLIC hearings on the proposed amendment of section 25 of the Constitution to make expropriation of land without compensation more explicit will be held in four towns in the Northern Cape over the next few days.

The ad hoc committee to Initiate and Introduce Legislation Amending Section 25 of the Constitution is set to resume its public hearings on Thursday, the first set of hearings since the announcement of the national Covid-19 lockdown.

The committee will travel in two groups. One group will visit Limpopo and another will travel to the Northern Cape in order to obtain public views on the matter.

The following week the groups will visit the Western Cape, the only remaining province still to hold public hearings. The committee visited all the other provinces earlier in the year, prior to the outbreak of Covid-19, to obtain public input on how the Constitution should be amended.

In the Northern Cape, hearings will be held in De Aar in the Nonzwakazi Hall on Thursday (22 October), in Kimberley at the City Hall on Friday (October 23), in Upington on Saturday (October 24) in the Tol Speelman Hall and in Springbok on Sunday (October 25) at the Concordia Hall.

All the meetings will start at 11am.
