How to help your child make friends in a new school

Whether your child has just started school, moved on to high school, or simply just changed schools, going to a school where you don’t know anyone can be daunting. 

Not all kids know how to make friends, and this can cause anxiety for them. 

It’s just as hard on parents because they want their children to be happy when they go to school and having friends makes school more pleasant. 

However, as a parent, you can guide your child through this period and help them transition smoothly into their new school and make new friends. 

Prepare them mentally

Open communication: Talk openly with your child about their anxieties and concerns.

Let them know it's okay to feel nervous and that making friends takes time.

Positive reinforcement: Emphasise the exciting aspects of the new school, such as new subjects, new teachers, and the opportunity to meet new people.
