Winnie Khumalo’s memorial service to be held at The Market Theatre
The vibrant life of South African songstress Winnie Khumalo will be celebrated during her memorial service at The Market Theatre in Johannesburg on Wednesday, January 15, at noon.
Khumalo, famed for her powerful voice and enchanting performances, passed away on Tuesday, January 7, at the age of 51 after a brief illness. She left behind a profound legacy in the South African music scene.
Khumalo rose to prominence with chart-topping hits such as “Live My Life”, captivating a nation with her melodious offerings.
Her career, which began at the tender age of 15 in Mofolo North, Soweto, spanned decades and saw her collaborate with some of the most recognised names in the industry.
She lent her vocal talents to iconic artists such as Brenda Fassie, Pure Magic, Bongo Maffin and DJ Cleo.
A testament to her versatility, Khumalo not only flourished in the music industry but also graced television screens, featuring in acclaimed shows such as the popular series “Muvhango” under the creative direction of Duma Ndlovu.
Her notable albums like “Hey Laitie” and “Tshina Tshina”, produced by Sello Chicco Twala, cemented her status as a leading figure in afropop.
In the 1990s, Khumalo ventured into gospel music with her album “Izono Zami”, produced by Pastor Langa Dube, showcasing her adaptability across genres.
After a pause to focus on family, she triumphantly re-entered the music scene in 2008 with her album “Just Wanna Live My Life”, which achieved commercial success and earned her a gold record, indicative of her enduring appeal.
