A flying carpet, a magical lamp, and a mischievous genie are set to take to the stage as Aladdin: A Musical Fantasy returns to Canal Walk this winter.
The family production runs from Saturday, June 28 to Saturday, July 20, bringing a fresh take on the timeless tale from The Arabian Nights.
Each year, Canal Walk's Centre court transforms into a full theatrical venue. This year marks 23 years of theatre for the shopping mall.
“This year marks something special,” said Vanessa Herbst, Canal Walk’s marketing manager.
“For 23 years, families have made this show part of their winter tradition. We’ve seen generations come through our doors, from wide-eyed toddlers to parents who remember coming here as kids themselves. That connection to the audience is what drives us every single year” she said.
This year’s show is set in the bustling streets of old Baghdad, where young Aladdin discovers a magical lamp and is thrust into a world of treasure, danger and discovery. The musical explores themes of bravery, second chances and the magic of believing in yourself.
The production is brought to life by award-winning creative duo Fred Abrahamse and Marcel Meyer, who co-wrote the original script.
Mr Meyer also composed the show’s music and lyrics, giving the story a fresh, theatrical rhythm.
“This isn’t just a retelling—it’s a full musical experience designed to enchant modern audiences while staying true to the heart of the classic tale,” said Mr Meyer.
Anzio September stars as Aladdin, with Mekaila Mathys as the bold and independent Princess Jasmir, and Onela Metuso as the Genie.
In addition to entertaining audiences, this year’s show also supports a meaningful cause.
A portion of ticket and programme sales will go to The Reach Trust, a non-profit organisation focused on early childhood development and digital literacy in underserved Cape Town communities.
“Each ticket helps connect young children to learning opportunities,” said Andrew Rudge, CEO of The Reach Trust. “It’s entertainment with real impact.”
Performances take place daily at 11am, 12:30pm, and 2pm (closed Mondays), with tickets starting at R110 per person. The show runs for 55 minutes and is recommended for all ages. Children under 2 enter free if seated on a parent’s lap.
