The oldest rugby club in South Africa, Hamilton SP RFC, is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year.
A grand celebration is in the works to honour the club’s remarkable history, filled with unforgettable moments on the field and in the clubhouse, including nurturing several professional rugby players over the years.
The milestone has generated considerable excitement for the Green Point-based club, which is planning a birthday celebration worthy of the Hammies legacy.
As part of the celebrations, the club will host various tournaments throughout the year. A glamorous gala event will kick off the festivities on Friday March 14, at the club’s home in Green Point, at the foot of the DHL Stadium.
While Hamilton celebrates its rich history, the club is also excited to launch a new initiative: Girls' Rugby at Hamilton. For the first time in its long history, the club is offering opportunities for girls to join and showcase their competitive skills in the women’s rugby section.
The girls rugby programme was launched this year in partnership with the Girl Power Foundation. The club reports that interest has been overwhelming, with membership numbers growing rapidly every week.
Girls are still welcome to join the club on Friday March 14, between 4pm and 5.30pm to learn new skills.
The Hammies women's team will also play the curtain raiser against Girl Power False Bay for the Hamilton vs Villagers derby to be played later this month.
