On December 13, a joint safety parade with the City and SAPS was held on the Grand Parade in the CBD as part of the first major public safety initiative since the signing of a cooperation agreement between the SAPS, City and Western Cape Government in August.
The event included a parade of officers with their service animals, a convoy of vehicles and an exhibition on the Grand Parade of City and SAPS vehicles and equipment.
More than 870 of the City’s Project 1 000 cadets also participated in the parade, with the event marking their formal appointment as Learner Law Enforcement officers.
In joining the more than 4 000 permanent uniformed enforcement and emergency personnel, the cadets are contributing to the City’s largest ever safety deployment over a festive season.
Other festive season readiness highlights include:
• High-tech support: New camera tech, including drones and Africa's largest CCTV network, will help keep an eye on popular spots like Table Mountain, beaches, and communities.
• Safety operations: Coordinated from the Traffic Management Centre in Goodwood with multiple Joint Operational Centres across the city.
• Vehicle checks: Expect checkpoints on major routes, focusing on curbing alcohol misuse and anti-social behaviour. Let's party responsibly.
• Drowning prevention: Over 680+ lifeguards on beaches and pools to ensure water safety, plus the City’s Identikidz programme to ensure the safety of children while visiting the beach.
• Spring clean: Major cleaning efforts are in place with our mascot, Bingo, promoting cleanliness across the City.

As we close out this year, I would like to give special thanks to all our committed City of Cape Town officials who have worked tirelessly through the year to deliver services to residents and business in the area. Thank you also to all residents and our community organisations for their constructive engagements and ongoing efforts to work together to make Ward 77 a great place to live and work.
City Council is on recess from December 6 until January 13. I will be taking some time to rest and reflect over this period, and also prepare for the year ahead, which I'm really looking forward to. 2024 has been a wonderful year, and can't wait to start tackling new projects and initiatives in 2025. The list is already very long, but if you have any suggestions, please do drop me an email.
