A Bo-Kaap writer's hard-hitting show received a standing ovation, leaving many audience members emotional, during its debut on Sunday May 4 at the Suidoorsterfees at the Artscape theatre.
Zubayr Charles's one-man show Please, don't call me moffie was presented by Kuils River actor Anzio September.
The production tells the story of five coloured men in their late 20s, reacting and sharing their experiences growing up queer and grappling with identity and religion in Cape Town.
"The show was written with no political or religious agenda in mind," said Charles.
"All I wanted was to create a story in which people might learn to be kinder to those struggling with their identity and those still trying to find their place in the world. May we all learn to have a little more peace and compassion."
While more runs of Please, don't call me moffie are still in the pipeline, Charles's this bra's a psycho, a crime thriller and cat-and-mouse tale, debuts at Artscape from Wednesday July 30 to Saturday August 2. Tickets will be available soon.
