Two dance teachers are giving jazz dance classes to raise money for Woodside Special Care Centre, a home for those with intellectual disabilities.
Zelda Davis, of Wetton, and Alec van de Rheede, of Rondebosch East, have been running the dances at the home, at 29 Lawson Road, Rondebosch East, since last September with all the class fees supporting the home.
Ms Davis, a fund-raiser for the home, said she had come up with the idea and had spoken to Mr Van de Rheede and the home’s management about it.
“I have always been passionate about dance, and it is always good to share your passion to give back, and we agreed that all money raised from classes would go back into Woodside,” said Mr Van de Rheede.
Wendy Summers, of Milnerton, has been part of the class since it started. “I learned a lot. We have a lot of fun here and have become a little family, and it’s amazing doing this for a good cause,” she said.
Terence Siljeur, of Zeekoevlei, who joined the class a month ago, said: “I stand fully behind Zelda in raising funds for this organisation.”
Woodside manager Melanie Brand said some of the dance students had also donated books, clothes and other items to the home.
The classes were held once a week but since April they have been held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7pm. Each class costs R70. Everyone is welcome, and to join, call Ms Davis at 082 419 8398 or Mr Van de Rheede at 082 442 2112.
